UPSTATE NEW YORK GUIDE

New Yorkers call everything north of Manhattan 'UPSTATE NEW YORK'. For a very long time I wanted to travel in the magical towns that lie on the beaches north of Manhattan, and finally it happened. Our road trip that took a total of 48 hours (in hindsight, I recommend you do it in three days), crossed New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts (it's okay, I can't pronounce that word out loud either). October is the best time to travel, as it is the autumn period. The trees are in spectacular fall colors, orange, yellow, red and brown, just before they turn into piles in the coming winter.

Car rental and departure from Manhattan

We rented a car from the Hertz company. A reliable car company, where you can reserve a car in advance and pay only upon arrival at the location. Leave early in the morning so you don't miss the day, the exit from Manhattan is always crowded.

Important tips -

  1. Rent a car from a branch close to the hotel. This little tip will simply improve the beginning and end of your trip, when you don't have to carry your luggage around the city. Most rental companies have many branches throughout Manhattan so this is not a problem.
  2. Rent a high-end car. Driving is sometimes on unlit roads, and after the sun goes down you'll want to feel safe inside your vehicle. (And don't worry about fuel, the prices in the United States are ridiculous, 30$ for a full tank of Jeep).
  3. Don't forget to make sure there's a Bluetooth connection or an AUX cable, bring a USB-C adapter, and buy plenty of snacks, because on our Roadtrip, as it's called, we spent quite a few hours on the road.

GREENWICH, CONNECTICUT

A magical, wealthy beach town with endless yacht clubs and a beautiful harbor. is about an hour's drive from Manhattan. The end of October is HALLOWEEN, so don't panic at the sight of skeletons and ghosts in the streets. Arrived at the main street of the city - GREENWICH AVENUE. Stop to have breakfast in one of the small cafes, and walk around the boulevard in the charming boutique shops.

NEW CANAAN, CONNECTICUT

A tiny town about 25 minutes drive from Greenwich. Go to THE GLASS HOUSE, an amazing architectural structure and museum, built by architect Philip Johnson. In 1949 Philip decided to build himself a house on a rural area he purchased in the town, measuring almost 200 dunams. His house was declared a national historic building, and after his death it was opened to the public. You need to order a tour ticket in advance and there is an organized shuttle to the complex itself from the reception building. There are different types of tickets that include different tours of the grounds and the museum. Highly recommended.

NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT

About a fifty minute drive from NEW CANAAN. An elegant town with intelligent people, the one where Yale University is located. An abundant student atmosphere surrounds the streets, and the university complex is so large that it almost encompasses everyone. Just breathe the air in it and you already feel your IQ rising. Visit the Yale University Library. A huge and magnificent building, both inside and out leaves you speechless. But surprisingly, most of the books there are enclosed in a huge glass cabinet, so if you fantasized about sitting down to read a book, and maybe just flip through the pages and soak up the atmosphere, then no. However, do not miss the visit.

So it's already 6pm and the sun is setting (how did the day go by so fast with only three stops right?) and suddenly we start to feel our stomachs talking. We stopped to eat at an excellent Italian restaurant with lovely service called TARRY LODGE. We ordered pizza and pasta (what did you expect) and drank two large glasses of wine - water. There is still driving ahead.

A LITTLE BIT OF DRIVING

We finished eating and it was already 7 pm. Of course, this is the time we had already planned to reach our end town, where we will sleep - PROVINCETOWN. So they start driving, name Wise, and realize that there are still 4 hours of driving. Like any two typical girls, they put on a nostalgia playlist at full volume and start singing at the top of their voices (from Midnight in the Village by Harel Moyal to Hannah Montana and the Jones Brothers). Except for a gas stop, we drove directly to our hotel. All the spectacular scenery we saw during the day disappeared in the darkness and the unlit roads, and here we first thanked our jeep.

PROVINCETOWN, MASSACHUSETTS

This town is considered the official gay town in Massachusetts. Most of its residents are part of the LGBT community, including the mayor. Only in the morning, we found out how amazing it is. We stayed at a perfect boutique B&B called WHITE PORCH INN. It is a two-story private house, which has been converted into a small boutique hotel, consisting of only five guest rooms. Some are on the top floor and some are on the ground floor. The entrance to our room was through the picturesque back porch of the house, with a small white fence and a solid wooden floor To be more magical. We went around to the main entrance of the hotel. The delicious smell of the fresh pancakes left a trail outside. Everything was prepared fresh on the spot Highly recommend. The town itself sits on the edge of the bay of Cape COD so it is surrounded by the sea on almost all sides, really colorful Like the people who live in it. An atmosphere of charm and happiness just walks the streets. A man who walked his dog on the street felt like a piece of heaven. Recommended for those who have time to go on a whale cruise in the harbor or go to a bar or two in the evening.

NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND

Don't miss a short walk at CLIFF WALK in Newport. It is a high above water walkway that circles the sea through the impressive estates of Newport. The town is about a two and a half hour drive from Provincetown, back towards Manhattan.

MYSTIC, CONNECTICUT

The famous town from the movie 'Mystic Pizza' with Julia Roberts. Indeed, the pizza there is amazing. Do not miss a visit to the spice shop THE SPICE & TEA EXCHANGE, where there are special local blends of spices, different types of tea and even spiced sugar. Buy the cinnamon apple sugar, and one of the wonderful mixtures with chamomile, and for the brave among us - taste the brown sugar with the spicy chili. Continue walking on the bridge that crosses Mystic and observe the view.

BACK TO NEW YORK CITY

The return from Mystic to Manhattan will take about two and a half hours. Enjoy the road, listen to songs, stop in one of the many towns along the highway (STAMFORD is a good option) and prepare for traffic jams at the entrance to the big city. You can call the car rental company to extend the return time if you exceed it. We returned two hours later than planned and paid another 12$. So don't be stressed, just remember to update. Looking back, as I mentioned at the beginning, I recommend making the trip over three days and taking a little more time to enjoy each place. If I had another night, I would sleep in Mystic or Newport, which are more or less half way from Provincetown to New York.

Inspired by this trip I created the work "The Girl in the Sky". A long process of registration
